Sahasrara: How to activate and balance your crown chakra

Sahasrara: How to activate and balance your crown chakra

The seventh major chakra in ancient Hindu traditional practice is called “Sahasrara” which is located right above our head making it also known as the “crown chakra” where its energy starts radiating upwards positively connecting one’s holistic well-being.

Sahasrara means “thousand-petalled” which is why it is represented by its logo with a lotus flower with one thousand, or even an infinite number of petals. Its power is believed to be stored at the seat of one’s intelligence where the individual consciousness meets the higher state of universal consciousness. It is also associated with the element of cosmos symbolizing pure light and the source of creation - connecting the thought, spirit, enlightenment, wisdom, unity, and self-knowledge. When it’s activated, it uplifts us mentally, emotionally, and intellectually.

When the crown chakra is aligned, we are humbled by the wisdom we acquire and begin to view life differently, more positively, and we start appreciating every little thing around us and what life has to offer believing it’s what’s best for us and what the highest being has stored for us. Consequently, when we suffer from Sahasrara imbalance, we struggle from:

  • Loss of inspiration
  • Intuition is working properly
  • Mental fog/confusion/indecisiveness
  • Lack of spiritual connection
  • Feeling superior over others
  • Lack of appreciation of our environment/everything around us
  • Lack of understanding about the worldly illusion and the universal consciousness
  • Being judgmental, having social issues, lack of sympathy towards others, being bias and having prejudices about many things in life, etc

Some may even experience physical symptoms of a crown chakra imbalance. Although, some of these symptoms are common when one experiences other chakra misalignment. It is because the crown chakra is said to be the top of all primary chakras.

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Sinus pain
  • Thyroid issues
  • Schizophrenia
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Sore eyes

But what mainly causes the crown chakra imbalance?

    1. A blocked chakra connecting the other. The crown chakra is believed to be connected to the third eye chakra and when one is misaligned, it is likely to affect the other chakra next to it.
    2. Denial/Lack of Trust. Sahasrara chakra is responsible for our intuition and critical thinking skills, and when we deny ourselves our intuition, it is said to shrink this chakra’s power and continue to weaken until it becomes imbalanced.
    3. Sickness. When one gets sick, particularly with colds and headaches, it causes the crown chakra to be temporarily blocked. This usually doesn’t last long, especially when we’re in the process of healing. With a proper holistic wellness lifestyle and self-care rituals, everything should be back to normal when we recover from illness.
    4. Stress/Fear. If we are going through something and we experience trauma, continuous stress, anxiety and depression, we tend to lose control of our chakra which then leads to its blockage.
  • Not getting enough sleep. The human body is designed to hibernate and heal when we sleep at night. This is why sleeping on time to get enough sleep every night is generally essential for the human body to function properly by restoring the energy exhausted in the daytime. When one experiences lack of sleep, this will likely cause his/her crown chakra to be out of balance and get blocked.
    1. Toxic people and/or environment. Chakras are best activated through some meditational routine as it gives us the freedom to only listen to ourselves and the higher self within us allowing our energy centered in our universal consciousness. However, when we are surrounded by some people negatively influencing us and continuously disturbing our environment and inner peace, it leads us to confusion, therefore blocking our crown chakra.

How to heal the crown chakra and restore its balance:

Holistic wellness isn’t complicated if we’re all determined to do what requires us to keep holistically fit and balanced - most of the time, the solution is just in our hands and depends on ourselves. Always remember, you are your best healer!

  • Meditate and visualize. Meditation gives us the freedom to solely focus on our inner voice and thoughts and opens us the door to the higher level of understanding of our environment, of the world around us, and of ourselves. It gives us power to control our mind and leads us to the universal consciousness.
  • Go to bed before 9 PM. Get enough sleep. As mentioned earlier, it helps us restore the energy used throughout the day, especially if you’ve recently experienced burnout at work, or have fallen ill. Make sure to get lots of rest as your crown chakra needs it to stay healthy and strong. Your chakra will heal at night when you are sleeping.
      • Get up before sunrise. This is an Ayurvedic and Yogic practice to welcome the day instead of letting it welcome you. Be the first to rise, offer a prayer, meditate, and do the rest of your holistic morning dinacharya.
      • Pranayama. It is a breathing exercise to let the prana flow properly leading it to the areas throughout our body that need restorative healing the most.
      • Yoga. Yoga has been in practice hand in hand with Ayurveda as its sister science, no wonder why these two legendary holistic systems go in tandem in terms of leading a holistic wellness practice.
      • Practice Abhyanga. Abhyanga is a self-massage using a warm oil to stimulate lymphatic drainage. It supports us in getting rid of toxins inside us. Have your checked our Abhyanga collection yet? Get all three doshic body and massage oils and a free Kansa wand! :)
  • Color therapy. Did you know that as simple as choosing the colors around us can help us cope with our wellness holistically? Ayurvedic practitioners even guide people to harmonize their emotions with the colors associated with their dosha to promote peace of mind and balance a misaligned chakra.
  • Eat healthy. Healing starts from within and works its way out. Ayurveda follows this healing system to repair from the inside letting the energy flow and radiate throughout our body. Choose the right food to keep fit.
  • Realizing how balancing the crown chakra is very beneficial, we should begin today and start avoiding possible things which cause its misalignment to prevent worsening chakra imbalances. The crown chakra connects us to the infinite universe and bonds us to those around us through oneness. It serves as the compass in our life.

Our crown chakra is where we receive guidance that will help us in our journey towards leading a holistic wellness lifestyle. So let us not take it lightly, and let’s make sure to take some time everyday to evaluate our condition to see how our crown chakra is performing.

Keep it open and balanced to guide you on your path.

Over centuries, the practice of Ayurvedic wellness has proven to result in a more rejuvenated body, mind and spirit, thus nurturing mindfulness and stronger immunity.
